The conversion uses the machine maker’s formula: watts = 2.80 divided by pace cubed, with pace in seconds per metre. It applies to the display on the ergometer and to steady effort; with changing pace the times differ.

How it is calculated

The split is the time the ergometer shows for 500 metres. A split of 2:00 means 4 minutes per kilometre and a power of about 202 watts; a split of 1:50 is about 263 watts.

How it is calculated

The machine maker calculates power as watts = 2.80 / pace³, where pace is the seconds per metre, that is the split divided by 500. Speed enters with the third power: 10 percent faster needs about 37 percent more power. The reverse is pace = (2.80 / watts) to the power of one third. From the split follows the time for any distance: split times distance divided by 500.

Which distances are common?

On the ergometer 2000 m is the standard distance for races and tests, together with 500 m, 1000 m, 5000 m, 6000 m and 10,000 m as well as the half marathon and marathon. With the mode “From distance and time” you get the split you rowed for it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a split to watts?

Watts = 2.80 divided by (split in seconds / 500) cubed. For 2:05 that is 125 / 500 = 0.25 and so 2.80 / 0.015625 = 179.2 W.

How long does 2000 m take at a 2:00 split?

Four times 500 m gives 4 × 2:00 = 8:00 minutes.

How many watts does a 1:45 split need?

About 302 W. Even a few seconds faster needs much more power because speed enters with the third power.
