How it is calculated
How to play FreeCell
FreeCell is a patience game with one 52-card deck in which every card is face up from the start. Luck hardly matters: with enough thought almost every deal can be solved. The goal is to move all cards to the four foundations, sorted by suit from Ace to King.
Layout
- Eight columns: four with 7 and four with 6 cards, all face up.
- Four free cells at the top left: each holds exactly one card of any kind.
- Four foundations at the top right: one per suit, built up from Ace to King.
Rules
- Columns are built down in alternating colours: a red 8 on a black 9.
- Strictly, only one card moves at a time. Runs are moved by using free cells and empty columns as temporary storage – the game does those steps for you (a “supermove”).
- An empty column accepts any card or run.
- Safe cards go to the foundations automatically – Aces and twos, plus cards no longer needed in the columns.
How many cards can you move at once?
The formula is (free cells + 1) × 2empty columns. With 4 free cells and no empty column that is 5 cards; with 2 free cells and one empty column it is (2 + 1) × 2 = 6 cards. If the target itself is an empty column, it does not count – then only half as many cards fit.
Deal numbers 1–32,000
Deals are numbered like in the classic Windows version: the same number gives the same layout everywhere, so you can replay a deal or compare with friends. According to Wikipedia, only deal #11982 of these 32,000 is unsolvable – “New game” therefore skips it. “Restart deal” starts the current number again.
Tips
- Only fill free cells when you have to – every occupied cell cuts the number of cards you can move.
- An empty column is worth twice as much as a free cell.
- Dig out Aces and twos buried deep in a column first.
Hint, daily deal and sharing
“Hint” (key H) marks one possible move – first cards that fit a foundation, then runs that fit another column, then a card worth parking in a free cell. It is a pointer, not a solver, so it does not guarantee a win. “Daily deal” gives everyone the same deal number on the same day; it is always one of the solvable numbers. After a win you can share your time and moves; the link opens exactly this deal number.

Frequently asked questions
What are the rules of FreeCell?
All 52 cards lie face up in eight columns. Build down in alternating colours and use the four free cells as temporary storage. The goal is to move every card to the foundations, by suit from Ace to King.
How many cards can you move at once in FreeCell?
(free cells + 1) × 2 to the power of the number of empty columns. With 4 free cells that is 5 cards; with 3 free cells and one empty column it is 8. Moving into an empty column halves the limit.
Is every game of FreeCell solvable?
Almost. Of the classic 32,000 numbered deals only #11982 is unsolvable, and Wikipedia estimates that about 99.999% of all possible deals can be won. Here “New game” only picks solvable numbers.
Can I play a specific deal number?
Yes. Enter a number from 1 to 32,000 at the top and tap “Play”. The layout matches the same number in the classic Windows version.
How is FreeCell different from Klondike Solitaire?
In Klondike many cards are face down and there is a stock, so luck plays a part. In FreeCell everything is open and four free cells help you – it is almost a pure thinking game.
Can I play FreeCell free without signing up?
Yes. The game runs entirely in your browser, with no account and no download. Your game and statistics stay stored in your browser only.
