How it is calculated

Pig Latin is an English word game in which every word is rearranged by a few fixed rules. It has nothing to do with real Latin; the name is just part of the joke.

The rules

If a word begins with a vowel, “way” is added (or “yay” or “ay”). If it begins with consonants, the whole consonant cluster up to the first vowel moves to the end, followed by “ay”. “qu” stays together, and “y” counts as a consonant at the start of a word and as a vowel afterwards. Words without any vowel just get “ay”.

Special cases and example

A capital letter at the start moves to the new first letter, ALL-CAPS words stay in capitals, punctuation stays where it is, hyphenated parts are converted separately, and words containing digits stay unchanged. Example: “Hello, world! Pig Latin is fun.” becomes “Ellohay, orldway! Igpay Atinlay isway unfay.”. More cases: Hello → Ellohay · HELLO → ELLOHAY · apple → appleway · string → ingstray · queen → eenquay · my → ymay · don’t → on’tday.

Frequently asked questions

How does Pig Latin work?

With a consonant start, the consonant cluster moves to the end and “ay” is added (string → ingstray). With a vowel start, “way” goes on the end (apple → appleway).

What happens to capitals and punctuation?

A capital first letter moves to the new first letter (Hello → Ellohay), and a word in all capitals stays in capitals (HELLO → ELLOHAY). Punctuation stays in place.

Can I translate Pig Latin back?

Not reliably. From “ellohay” you cannot tell how many letters came first, which is why the tool only converts into Pig Latin.
