The separator is the semicolon (a tab or vertical bar also works). Without a separator the back stays empty.

How it is calculated

How it works

  1. Type one card per line: the question on the left, the answer on the right, separated by a semicolon.
  2. Choose the card size. The default is 95 × 65 mm – eight cards fit on a letter or A4 sheet.
  3. Create the PDF. It alternates a page of questions with a page of the matching answers.
  4. Print double-sided (flip on the long edge), cut along the cut lines, done.

How the layout is calculated

The grid fits as many cards per sheet as leave at least 5 mm of page margin, and centres them. For the backs the columns are mirrored so that question and answer line up when the sheet is flipped on the long edge. Long text is wrapped; the type shrinks from 16 down to 8 point, after which the text is shortened.

Card sizes

There is no fixed standard for flashcards; sizes from the ISO 216 series are common: A7 (74 × 105 mm) gives 4 cards per A4 sheet, A6 (105 × 148 mm) fits once per sheet. You can set any size.

Checking duplex printing

Printers flip sheets differently. Print one sheet as a test, hold it up to the light and set “flip on long edge” or “short edge” in the print dialog as needed.

Honest limits

There is one typeface, with no images, colours or formatting. Emoji and Asian characters cannot be printed. Your cards are not saved; for quizzing yourself on screen there is the vocabulary trainer.
