Steps to calories calculator
This calculator turns steps to calories: it takes your step count, step length, weight and walking pace, works out distance and walking time, and uses the MET value of walking to calculate the energy you burn.
Example: Units: imperial (ft, in, lb) · Number of steps 10,000 · Step length (inches) 30 in · Weight (pounds) 154 lb · Walking pace: moderate (4.5–5.5 km/h, 2.8–3.4 mph) → Calories burned walking: 405 kcal. Source: Compendium 2024, 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities – Walking (MET-Werte 17152: 2,8 · 17170: 3,0 · 17190: 3,8 · 17200: 4,8 · 17220: 5,5). Updated: .
How it is calculated
How the calculator converts steps to calories
Steps alone say little about energy – distance, pace and weight decide. So the calculation runs in three steps:
- Distance = steps × step length. Example: 10,000 steps × 75 cm = 7.5 km (4.7 mi).
- Time = distance ÷ walking speed. At a moderate 5 km/h (3.1 mph) that is 90 minutes.
- Energy = MET × body weight in kg × hours. At 3.8 MET (moderate walking) and 70 kg (154 lb): 3.8 × 70 × 1.5 = 399 kcal.
The MET value comes from the Compendium of Physical Activities (2024): 2.8 MET for slow walking (3.2 to 3.9 km/h), 3.0 at 4 km/h, 3.8 at 4.5 to 5.5 km/h, 4.8 at 5.6 to 6.3 km/h and 5.5 at 6.4 to 7.1 km/h. One MET is roughly 1 kcal per kilogram per hour at rest. Because your body would burn that energy anyway, the calculator also shows the extra use: (MET − 1) × kg × hours, 294 kcal in the example.
How to convert steps to calories
- Enter step count, step length and weight. Measure your step length by taking ten normal steps and dividing the distance by ten.
- Choose the walking pace that fits you best.
- Read calories, extra use, distance, time and the table for other step counts.
Steps to calories chart
Total calories at a 75 cm step and a moderate 5 km/h (3.8 MET), by body weight:
| Steps | 60 kg (132 lb) | 70 kg (154 lb) | 80 kg (176 lb) | 90 kg (198 lb) | 100 kg (220 lb) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2,000 | 68 | 80 | 91 | 103 | 114 |
| 5,000 | 171 | 200 | 228 | 257 | 285 |
| 8,000 | 274 | 319 | 365 | 410 | 456 |
| 10,000 | 342 | 399 | 456 | 513 | 570 |
| 12,000 | 410 | 479 | 547 | 616 | 684 |
| 15,000 | 513 | 599 | 684 | 770 | 855 |
| 20,000 | 684 | 798 | 912 | 1,026 | 1,140 |
To burn 500 kcal this way takes about 14,600 steps at 60 kg, 12,500 at 70 kg, 11,000 at 80 kg and 9,700 at 90 kg.
What matters
- Weight: a heavier person burns more over the same distance.
- Pace: faster walking burns more per minute but only a little more per kilometre.
- Terrain: uphill, sand, snow or a heavy backpack raise the use clearly; the calculator is for level, firm paths.
Related: distance alone is in the steps to km calculator, other activities in the calories burned calculator and daily needs in the TDEE calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How many calories do 10,000 steps burn?
At 70 kg, a 75 cm step and a moderate pace (5 km/h) it is about 400 kcal in total, of which roughly 290 kcal above resting energy. At 90 kg it would be around 510 kcal.
How many calories does one step burn?
On average about 0.04 kcal at 70 kg and a moderate pace, or roughly 40 kcal per 1,000 steps. It depends on weight, step length and pace.
Why does my fitness watch show something different?
Watches estimate with their own models and sensors and only know step length and pace roughly. The calculator uses fixed Compendium values for level walking.
What does MET mean?
MET is the multiple of your resting energy use. One MET equals about 1 kcal per kg of body weight per hour. Walking at 5 km/h is 3.8 MET.
Does walking faster burn more calories?
Per minute yes, per distance only a little more. Because you arrive sooner at a higher pace, the use per kilometre is nearly the same.
How many steps do I need to burn 500 calories?
At a 75 cm step and 5 km/h: about 12,500 steps at 70 kg, 11,000 at 80 kg and 9,700 at 90 kg. That is total energy, including what your body burns at rest.
How many calories do 5,000 steps burn?
About 200 kcal at 70 kg and 228 kcal at 80 kg, assuming a 75 cm step and a moderate pace of 5 km/h.
