How it is calculated

The Maya Long Count counts days from a creation date: with the generally accepted GMT correlation, 13.0.0.0.0 4 Ajaw 8 Kumkʼu fell on 11 August 3114 BCE (Julian Day 584283). The count reached 13.0.0.0.0 again on 21 December 2012 – a Tzolkʼin day 4 Ajaw and a Haabʼ day 3 Kʼankʼin.

How the three calendars work

Tzolkʼin and Haabʼ together form the Calendar Round, which repeats after 18980 days (about 52 years). Wikipedia’s worked example checks the rules: 9.12.2.0.16 is 1383136 days after creation and falls on 5 Kibʼ 14 Yaxkʼin.

Correlation and limits

The link between the Maya count and our calendar is not fixed by the inscriptions themselves. Most researchers use 584283; the Thompson (Lounsbury) value 584285 shifts every date by two days and can be chosen above. Dates before the Gregorian reform of 1582 are given in the proleptic Gregorian calendar, not the Julian one.
