Barbell Plate Calculator
This barbell plate calculator shows which plates to load on each side of the bar: enter target weight and bar weight, choose your plate set and read the combination with warm-up steps.
Example: Target weight (total) 225 lb / kg · Bar weight 45 lb / kg · Unit: Pounds (lb) · Plates available: Standard (kg: from 1.25, lb: from 2.5) → Plates per side: Per side: 45 × 2 → total 225 lb. Source: Wikipedia – Barbell (Olympic barbell 20 kg, plates in kg and lb). Updated: .
How it is calculated
For 225 lb with a 45 lb bar you load two 45 lb plates on each side, because each side carries 90 lb. The calculator subtracts the bar weight, halves the rest and fills it with the largest plates that fit.
How it is calculated
First the bar weight is subtracted from the target weight and the rest is divided by two, because the plates sit equally on the left and right. Then plates are added from largest to smallest as long as they fit into the remainder. With the usual plate sets (25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5, 1.25 kg) this leads to the combination with the fewest plates. If the target cannot be loaded exactly with the plates you have, the calculator gives the weight you reach and the next loadable step.
What the table is for
- The warm-up steps show how to work up to your set with 40, 60, 80 and 90 percent of the target weight.
- The “large plates only” set is for gyms without small plates.
- In pounds the usual set of 45, 35, 25, 10, 5 and 2.5 lb applies.

Frequently asked questions
How do I work out which plates to load?
Subtract the bar weight from the target weight, divide the rest by two and load the largest fitting plates on each side. The calculator does this for you.
How much does a barbell weigh?
An Olympic men’s bar weighs 45 lb (20 kg), a women’s bar 35 lb (15 kg). The value is adjustable in the calculator.
Why can I not reach my target weight exactly?
It depends on the smallest plate. With 2.5 lb plates the total weight changes in 5 lb steps.
Does the calculator work in kilograms too?
Yes, choose kilograms (kg). Then the plates 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5 and 1.25 kg apply.
