Midrange Calculator

This midrange calculator finds the value exactly halfway between the smallest and the largest number. Example: for 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42 the midrange is (4 + 42) / 2 = 23.

Calculation steps
  • From 6 values: smallest 4, largest 42.
  • Midrange = (minimum + maximum) / 2 = (4 + 42) / 2 = 46 / 2 = 23.
  • For comparison: midrange 23, mean 18, median 15.5.
The midrange uses only the two extreme values and therefore reacts strongly to outliers. For typical values the median or mean is more robust.

How it is calculated

The midrange is the midpoint between the smallest and the largest value of a data set. It is a very simple measure of location: you only need two numbers from the list.

Formula and steps

Midrange = (minimum + maximum) / 2. The calculator sorts the numbers, reads off the minimum and maximum and computes the middle. It also shows the range (maximum − minimum), the arithmetic mean and the median so you can compare the measures of location directly.

Example

For 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 the midrange is (4 + 42) / 2 = 23 and the range is 38. The mean is 108 / 6 = 18 and the median is (15 + 16) / 2 = 15.5. The midrange sits above both because the large value 42 pulls it up. For 1, 2, 3, 4, 100 it would even be 50.5, although four of the five values are below 5.

Frequently asked questions

What is the midrange?

The value exactly halfway between the minimum and maximum of a data set: (minimum + maximum) / 2.

How does it differ from the mean?

The mean uses all values, the midrange only the two outer ones. That makes it simpler but more sensitive to outliers.

When is the midrange useful?

For quick estimates and symmetric data. With outliers or skewed data the median or mean is more informative.
