How bowling is scored
A game has 10 frames. In frames 1 to 9 you get two balls unless you roll a strike. Scoring follows the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Playing Rules, Rule 2:
- Strike (X): all 10 pins with the first ball. Worth 10 plus the pins of your next two balls.
- Spare (/): the remaining pins knocked down with the second ball. Worth 10 plus the pins of your next ball.
- Open frame: pins are still standing after two balls – only the pins knocked down count.
- 10th frame: a strike or spare there earns a third ball so the bonus can be counted.
- Maximum 300: 12 strikes in a row, i.e. 10 × 30.
Worked example: X, then 7 and 3 (spare), then 9 and 0. Frame 1: 10 + 7 + 3 = 20. Frame 2: 10 + 9 = 19, total 39. Frame 3: 9, total 48.
Entering rolls
Tap the pins for each ball; impossible values are disabled. Or type the game into the “Rolls” field: X for a strike, / for a spare, - or 0 for no pins, otherwise the number. Spaces do not matter. A foul (crossing the foul line) counts as a ball with 0 pins. The rolls are stored in the link, so you can share a game.
Notes
While bonus balls are missing, the score box of a strike or spare stays empty, just like on the lane display. “Highest possible score” assumes every remaining ball is a strike or spare. Handicaps, team totals and split marks are not calculated. No data is sent.
Frequently asked questions
How is a strike scored in bowling?
10 points plus the pins of the next two balls. Two strikes in a row (a double) give the first one 20 plus the next ball; three strikes (a turkey) give 30.
How is a spare scored?
10 points plus the pins of the next ball. A spare followed by 7 pins is worth 17 for that frame.
How does the 10th frame work?
A strike or spare in the 10th frame earns a third ball so the bonus can be counted. Without a strike or spare, the game ends after two balls.
What is the highest possible bowling score?
300 – a perfect game of 12 strikes in a row, as stated in USBC Rule 2e.
How do I enter a foul?
A foul counts as a ball with 0 pins. Tap “0” or type “-” in the field.
