Lap Counter with Lap Times

The first tap on the big button starts the clock, every further tap counts a lap. Set a target and the counter tells you when you are done – for the track, a running loop or the pool.

How it is calculated

How the lap counter works

  1. Optionally enter target laps and lap length, e.g. 25 laps of 400 m or 40 lengths of 25 m.
  2. Tap the big button: the clock starts. Every further tap ends a lap and shows lap time, total time and average.
  3. With a lap length you see the distance covered; with target laps, the projected total time based on your average so far. At the target the clock stops with an alert.
  4. Mis-tap? “Delete last lap” removes it while the clock keeps running. “Copy list” puts all laps on the clipboard as a table (to paste into a spreadsheet).

Worked example: after 5 laps in 10:00 the average is 2:00; with 12 target laps that gives a projection of 24:00. The fastest lap is marked green in the list, the slowest red.

What for?

Running track, swim training, bike loops, walking, karting – or anywhere you need to keep count with your hands busy. The button is big enough to hit on the move; on a computer the space bar counts.

Honest limits

Laps are counted when you tap – not automatically by GPS or sensor. Times are as precise as your tap (human reaction is around two tenths of a second). The tool is not meant for official timing.

Technology and privacy

As with a stopwatch, only timestamps are stored and all values are calculated from them. The running counter is saved locally in your browser, so it survives a page reload. Nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How do I count laps when running?

Enter the lap length (e.g. 400 m) and, if you like, a target, then tap the big button each time you cross the line. The counter shows lap, lap time, average and distance.

Can I use the lap counter for swimming?

Only if someone taps on the pool deck or the device lies protected at the edge. Enter the pool length (25 or 50 m) as lap length; water on the screen can trigger false taps.

What happens if I tap by mistake?

“Delete last lap” (or the U key) removes the last lap. The clock keeps running and the deleted lap time becomes part of the current lap.

Is the counter kept when I reload the page?

Yes. The state is stored locally in your browser and continues after a reload. “Reset” clears it.

Can I use it as a row counter for knitting?

Yes – tap once per row and ignore the times. With target laps the tool alerts you when the row count is reached.
