SWOLF Calculator

This SWOLF calculator adds the seconds and strokes for one pool length – or averages them over a whole swim. 30 seconds and 15 strokes for one length give a SWOLF of 45.

Example: Input: One length · Pool length: 25 m · Time for one length 30 s · Strokes for one length 15 → SWOLF: SWOLF 45. Source: Garmin – Instinct Solar Owner’s Manual, Swim Terminology: swolf = time for one pool length + number of strokes for that length (30 s + 15 strokes = 45); a stroke is one full cycle of the arm wearing the device; lower is better (read 10.10.2026). SWOLF = seconds + strokes for one length (Garmin definition); lower is better. The value depends on pool length and on how strokes are counted, so compare only your own swims in the same pool (calculated).

How it is calculated

SWOLF is the time in seconds plus the number of strokes for one pool length. 30 seconds and 15 strokes give a SWOLF of 45. This is how Garmin defines it in its owner’s manuals: a measure of swimming efficiency where, as in golf, a lower score is better. Garmin counts one stroke each time the arm wearing the watch completes a full cycle.

The same swimmer gets a higher SWOLF in a 50 m pool simply because each length is twice as long – compare scores only within one pool length.

Average over a whole swim

For a whole set the calculator divides total time plus total strokes by the number of lengths: 1000 m in a 25 m pool are 40 lengths; 20:00 of swimming time and 640 strokes give (1200 + 640) ÷ 40 = 46 (calculated from the definition per length). Leave rests out of the time, otherwise the average rises without you swimming less efficiently.

Lowering your SWOLF

SWOLF falls if you swim the length faster with the same strokes, or with fewer strokes at the same speed. The distance per stroke shows the second part: 25 m with 16 strokes is 1.56 m per stroke. Your pace per 100 m and the time for a given distance are on the swim pace calculator; how many lengths make a kilometre or a mile is shown by how many laps is a mile.

Frequently asked questions

How is SWOLF calculated?

Seconds for one pool length plus strokes for that length. 30 s + 15 strokes = 45 (Garmin’s example).

What is a good SWOLF score?

There is no general value: SWOLF depends on the pool length and on how strokes are counted. Lower is better, so use it to compare your own swims in the same pool.

How do I calculate an average SWOLF?

Divide total swimming time plus total strokes by the number of lengths: (1200 s + 640) ÷ 40 lengths = 46.

Does a stroke mean one arm or both?

In Garmin’s definition one stroke is one full cycle of the arm wearing the watch. If you count every arm pull, your number of strokes – and SWOLF – is higher.

Can I compare SWOLF from a 25 m and a 50 m pool?

No. A 50 m length takes about twice the time and strokes, so the score is roughly twice as high.

How is SWOLF measured in open water?

Garmin calculates it over 25 metres in open water. This calculator works with pool lengths of 25 m, 50 m or 25 yd.
