How many laps is a mile?

How many laps is a mile? In a 25 yard pool a mile is 70.4 lengths, in a 25 meter pool 64.37 lengths and in a 50 meter pool 32.19. On a 400 m track it is 4.02 laps in lane 1. Enter any distance to count lengths or laps.

One length is one pool length; there and back is two lengths. Calculated with the pool lengths of World Aquatics rule FR 2.1 and 1 yard = 0.9144 m.

How it is calculated

Lengths = distance ÷ pool length. A mile is 1,609.344 m (NIST), which is 1,760 yards. In a 25 yard pool that is 1,760 ÷ 25 = 70.4 lengths; in a 25 m pool, 64.37; in a 50 m pool, 32.19. Swimmers often say “lap” for one length, while others mean there and back – the calculator shows both.

Competition pools are 25.000 m or 50.000 m long under World Aquatics rule FR 2.1; a 25 yard pool is 22.86 m (1 yard = 0.9144 m, NIST). When a distance does not divide evenly, the calculator also shows the next whole number.

Laps on a running track

A standard running track is 400 m long, measured 0.30 m outward from the kerb in lane 1 (World Athletics TR 14). A mile is therefore 4.02 laps in lane 1, and 1 km is 2.5 laps. Each lane is 1.22 m wide and outer lanes are measured 0.20 m from the line, so a lap gets longer on the bends: lane 2 is 407.04 m and lane 8 is 453.03 m. A mile in lane 8 is only 3.55 laps.
