    How it is calculated

In short: This tool cuts a circle out of a photo and saves it as a square PNG whose corners outside the circle are transparent. That way the image fits any background – as a profile picture, on a website or in a presentation. Everything runs in your browser, with no upload.

    How it works

    1. Drag in an image, choose one or paste it with Ctrl + V.
    2. Drag the circle onto your subject and tighten it with the zoom slider (or mouse wheel).
    3. Pick an output size, for example 400 × 400 or 1080 × 1080 pixels. Optionally add a coloured border.
    4. Click “Save round image” – as PNG or WebP, both with transparency.

Background: why PNG and not JPG

An image file is always a rectangle. It only looks round if the corners are transparent – and that needs an alpha channel. PNG (a W3C standard) and WebP have one, JPG does not: the corners would turn white or black. Technically, the tool first draws the square selection and then applies a filled circle with the Porter-Duff operation “destination-in” (W3C Compositing and Blending): only what lies inside the circle stays visible. The edge is anti-aliased so it doesn’t look jagged.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I crop an image into a circle for free?

Drop the image here, place the circle and click “Save round image”. Free, no account and no upload.

Why are the corners of my round image white?

Because it was saved as JPG, which has no transparency. This tool saves as PNG or WebP, so the corners stay see-through.

How do I circle crop an image in PowerPoint or Canva?

In PowerPoint select the picture, choose “Crop → Crop to Shape → Oval” and set the aspect ratio to 1:1; in Canva use a circle frame. To get a separate file with transparent corners, export it as done here.

What size should a round profile picture be?

Platforms state different minimum sizes and change them from time to time. 400 × 400 to 1080 × 1080 pixels is usually on the safe side – check the platform’s help pages if in doubt.

Can I add a border around the circle?

Yes. “Border (ring)” adds a coloured ring on the inside of the edge, up to 15% of the diameter.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Move the circle with your finger and zoom with the slider. After saving, the PNG is in your downloads or the Files app.
