How the Islamic calendar works
The Islamic calendar (Hijri calendar, years marked “AH”) is a purely lunar calendar: 12 months of 29 or 30 days, 354 or 355 days in total. It is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, so Ramadan and the festivals move through all seasons. Years are counted from the Hijra, the Prophet Muhammad’s migration to Medina in 622. The day begins at sunset on the previous evening.
Umm al-Qura or tabular – what is the difference?
- Umm al-Qura is Saudi Arabia’s official calendar. It fixes the start of each month in advance using astronomical criteria (new moon and moonset in Mecca).
- Tabular (“islamic-civil”) is strictly arithmetic: months alternate between 30 and 29 days, with 11 leap years of 355 days in a 30-year cycle.
The two usually match or are 1 day apart. Example: 16 June 2026 is 1 Muharram 1448 according to Umm al-Qura, but still 30 Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 in the tabular calendar. 18 February 2026 is 1 Ramadan 1447 in both.
Why the actual day may differ
Many communities and countries start a month only once the new crescent moon has actually been sighted – depending on location, weather and authority. The date can therefore differ regionally by 1–2 days from any calculation. For religious dates, the announcement of your local authority applies.
How does the tool calculate?
The conversion uses the calendars built into every browser under the ECMA-402 standard (Unicode CLDR/ICU, islamic-umalqura and islamic-civil). For the reverse direction, the converter searches for the Gregorian day whose Hijri date matches exactly – there are no home-made tables. It covers the years 1900 to 2100 (about 1317–1524 AH). What Hijri year is it?
On 27 September 2026 it is 16 Rabiʻ II 1448 according to Umm al-Qura. The year 1448 began on 16 June 2026; 1449 is expected to begin in June 2027.
Which calculation should I choose?
Umm al-Qura for Saudi Arabia, Mecca or official dates in the Gulf states. The tabular calendar is a purely arithmetic approximation used by many software programs.
Why does the date not match my mosque?
Because the start of the month there is often set by sighting the crescent moon or by a national authority. A difference of 1 to 2 days is normal.
When does an Islamic day begin?
At sunset on the previous evening. So 1 Ramadan 1447 (18 February 2026) began on the evening of 17 February 2026.
