Your net wealth reaches the nisab – zakat is due.
Zakat applies if the wealth stayed above the nisab for a full lunar year (hawl). You need to check this condition yourself.

How it is calculated

How to work out your zakat

  1. Enter cash, bank balance, investments, business stock and money owed to you. Enter gold and silver in grams.
  2. Enter today’s gold and silver price per gram (the numbers shown are only examples) and subtract debts that are due.
  3. Choose the nisab standard. If your net wealth is above it, zakat is 2.5% of that amount (one fortieth).

What is the nisab?

The nisab is the minimum amount above which zakat becomes due. Scholars set it differently: the common standards are 85 g of gold or 595 g of silver; another opinion uses 87.48 g of gold (and 612.36 g of silver). The silver standard gives a lower threshold, so more people owe zakat. Which standard you follow depends on your school of thought or your community’s advice; the calculator shows the value of the nisab in your currency for each.

What counts as wealth?

Usually zakatable are cash and savings, gold and silver, business stock, investments and debts owed to you that you expect to get back. Everyday items, the home you live in and your car do not count. Schools of thought differ about jewellery made of gold and silver; ask your community if unsure. Debts that are due are deducted.

Hawl and the limits of the calculator

Zakat applies to wealth that stayed above the nisab for a full lunar year (hawl), which the calculator cannot know. Farming and livestock have their own rules, and zakat al-fitr at the end of Ramadan is a fixed amount per person. The calculator is no substitute for religious advice. Useful dates are in the Ramadan calendar and the Hijri calendar, and you can find prayer times for your place here too.
