Average time calculator

This average time calculator adds up a list of times and divides by their number: 24:35, 25:10, 23:58 and 26:02 average 24:56.25. It handles minutes and seconds, hours, milliseconds and clock times such as bedtimes that cross midnight.

How it is calculated

How to calculate an average time

Average = total time ÷ number of times. Convert each time to seconds, add them up, divide, and convert back. For 24:35, 25:10, 23:58 and 26:02 the total is 1:39:45 = 5,985 seconds; 5,985 ÷ 4 = 1,496.25 seconds = 24:56.25. The median, the middle value of the sorted list, is 24:52.5.

Minutes and seconds are not decimals: 3:04.6 means 3 minutes and 4.6 seconds, which is 3.0767 decimal minutes. To switch between the two, use the minutes to decimal hours converter; to add or subtract single times, the time calculator.

Average clock time across midnight

Clock times wrap around: averaging 11:30 PM and 12:30 AM as plain numbers gives noon, which is wrong. The calculator places the times on a 24-hour circle, cuts it at the largest gap between them and then takes the normal average. For comparison it also shows the vector mean from circular statistics, which treats each time as an angle of 15° per hour.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the average of times?

Convert every time to seconds, add them, divide by the number of times and convert back to minutes and seconds. 24:35, 25:10, 23:58 and 26:02 total 5,985 s; ÷ 4 = 24:56.25.

How do I average minutes and seconds?

Not as decimals: 2:59 and 3:10 average 3:04.5 (184.5 s). Averaging them as 2.59 and 3.10 gives 2.845, which is not a valid time – no minute has 84.5 seconds.

How do I average times that cross midnight?

Treat them as one span: 11:30 PM and 12:30 AM are one hour apart, so the average is 12:00 AM. Choose “Clock times” and the calculator does this for you.

What is the difference between the average and the median time?

The average uses every value; the median is the middle of the sorted list. One very slow lap pulls the average up but hardly moves the median.

Can I enter milliseconds?

Yes. Write the decimals after the seconds, for example 0:45.237; the average is shown with the same precision.
