How it is calculated

Tracing helps young writers learn letter shapes and stroke direction before writing on their own. This generator makes tracing worksheets with exactly the letters, sight words or names your class is working on – in print or cursive.

How it works

  1. Type one exercise per line: “Aa Bb”, “cat”, or a student’s name.
  2. Choose a font: print (Andika, with single-story a and g) or cursive – US traditional or modern, UK joined and more.
  3. Choose the line size and click “Create PDF”: the first word is dark as a model, the rest light gray for tracing.

Handwriting lines

Primary handwriting paper has a solid headline, a dashed midline and a solid baseline. Choose 1 inch for kindergarten, 5/8 inch for grades 1–2 or 1/2 inch for grade 3. The font is sized so lowercase letters fill the space between baseline and midline.

Free fonts

Cursive fonts come from the Playwrite family by TypeTogether, the print font is Andika by SIL – all under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. The PDF is created entirely in your browser.

Honest limits

Letters are light gray, not dotted, and there are no stroke-order arrows. Playwrite follows common school models closely but may differ in details from your handwriting program (e.g. Zaner-Bloser or D’Nealian).

Frequently asked questions

Can I make name tracing worksheets?

Yes. Type the name and keep “Fill the page” on – the name repeats across the whole sheet. It stays in your browser and the page link; nothing is uploaded.

Is there a cursive option?

Yes: US cursive (traditional and modern), UK joined handwriting and several other countries’ school scripts, all from the free Playwrite family.

Which line size should I use?

Commonly 1 inch in kindergarten, 5/8 inch in first and second grade and 1/2 inch from third grade.

Are the fonts free to use?

Yes. All fonts are licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 and may be used and shared freely on worksheets.
