How it is calculated

Fill-in-the-blank (cloze) exercises check reading comprehension, spelling, vocabulary and key terms – and with this generator they take a minute to make. Great for ELA, science, social studies, ESL and foreign languages.

How it works

  1. Paste a text – from a reader, your lesson notes or your own story.
  2. Choose the blanks: put words in [square brackets], or let the tool take every nth word or random words.
  3. Pick word bank, blank style and font size – “Create PDF” gives you the worksheet plus answer key.

Classroom tips

Sharing and privacy

The PDF is created entirely in your browser. The text is stored in the page link so you can share a worksheet – only pass the link on if the text is fine to share.

Honest limits

Automatic blanks know no grammar: they pick by length and chance, not by part of speech. For targeted practice (only verbs, say), mark the words yourself.

Frequently asked questions

How do I mark the words to blank out?

Put each word in square brackets, e.g. “The [hedgehog] sleeps”. *Asterisks* work too, and several words in one bracket become a single blank.

Can the tool choose the blanks automatically?

Yes. “Every nth word” blanks, for example, every fifth word of the minimum length; “Random words” blanks a percentage you choose. “Different blanks” picks again.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The answer key shows the missing words in color inside the blanks – perfect for self-checking.

What is the word bank?

A box with all the answer words above the text. Words that appear more than once are listed once with “(2×)”. Print it alphabetical, shuffled or not at all.

Does it work for other languages?

Yes. The text can be in any language, including accented letters. For ESL or foreign-language vocabulary, simply mark the target words.
