How it is calculated
A word cloud (also called a tag cloud or word collage) shows at a glance which terms appear most often in a text: the more often a word occurs, the bigger it is drawn. Word clouds work well for presentations, classrooms, survey results (“What do you associate with …?”), workshops, social media posts or as a quick overview of a long document.
How to make a word cloud
- Paste your text into the box – any length, such as a speech, customer feedback or a list of keywords. Keywords that are repeated automatically get bigger.
- Choose colors, font and shape. “Circle” gives a round cloud, “Rectangle” fits slides nicely.
- Hide common words: words like “the”, “and” or “is” appear often in every text but carry no meaning. The list for the page language is preselected.
- Set the minimum length and maximum number of words, then click “Create word cloud”. Changing an option redraws the cloud instantly.
- Download the result as PNG (2400 × 1600 or 2000 × 2000 pixels) or SVG (scalable without loss, ideal for print and further editing).
How words are counted and arranged
The tool splits the text into words made of letters – accents and umlauts count, numbers and punctuation do not. Upper and lower case are merged (“Climate” and “climate” are one word) and the most frequent spelling is shown. Font size grows with the square root of the frequency, so less common words stay readable. Words are placed from largest to smallest along a spiral from the center outwards: each word goes to the first spot where it touches no other word and lies fully inside the chosen shape. If not all words fit, the tool shrinks the font step by step.
Limitations
- Words are counted, not understood: different forms of a word (“house”, “houses”) count separately, and phrases like “renewable energy” count as two words.
- The stop word lists are deliberately short. If a word gets in the way, simply remove it from the text.
- All words are horizontal; there are no rotated words and no image outlines as shapes.
- Common system fonts are used. An SVG file shows the font installed on the viewing device – if it is missing, a similar one is used. For an identical look everywhere, use the PNG.
Privacy
The word cloud is created entirely in your browser. Your text is not uploaded, not stored and not written to the address bar – once you close the tab it is gone. That makes it safe to use confidential survey answers or internal documents.

How do I make a word cloud for free?

How do you make words bigger in a word cloud?
Size depends on frequency: the more often a word appears in the text, the bigger it is. To emphasize a word, repeat it in the text – for survey answers, simply put each answer on its own line.
Why are words like “the” or “and” missing?
These are stop words that appear often in every text and would otherwise dominate the cloud. Under “Hide common words” you can switch the list or choose “None” to count every word.
Can I use the word cloud in PowerPoint or Google Slides?
Yes. Download the PNG and insert it as an image. Recent Office versions also accept the SVG, which stays sharp at any size.
Is my text stored anywhere?
No. The word cloud is calculated right in your browser. Your text never leaves your device and is not remembered by the browser either.
Can I make a word cloud from survey responses?
Yes. Copy all answers (for example from a spreadsheet or form export) into the text box, one below the other. Every mention counts, so popular answers get bigger. For live audience polls you need a polling tool; paste the collected answers here afterwards.
Why don’t all words fit into the cloud?
With many or very long words it gets crowded. The tool first shrinks the font by itself; if that is not enough, it tells you how many words were left out. Use fewer words, a higher minimum length or the rectangle shape.
What is the difference between PNG and SVG?
PNG is a pixel image (2400 × 1600 or 2000 × 2000 pixels) that looks the same everywhere. SVG is a vector graphic: scalable to any size, small, and editable in programs like Inkscape or Illustrator.
