Tongue twisters at random
Tongue twisters are short sentences full of similar sounds that are hard to say quickly. Spin the wheel and one comes up at random – then say it three times fast. Four sets are ready: traditional classics, S and SH sounds, R and L sounds and short ones for kids. You can also add your own.

How it is calculated
A tongue twister repeats similar sounds so closely that the mouth trips over them – the challenge is to say it clearly and quickly. The wheel picks one at random; in a set of 15 each tongue twister comes up with a probability of 1 in 15, about 6.67%.
How to play
- Choose a set and press Spin the wheel.
- Read the tongue twister slowly once, so everyone knows it.
- Now say it three times in a row, as fast as you can. A mistake means it is the next player’s turn.
- For a group game: whoever gets through three times without a slip scores a point.
The four ready-made sets
| Set | Example | What it trains |
|---|---|---|
| Classics | “She sells seashells by the seashore.” | the traditional English tongue twisters everyone knows |
| S and SH | “Sheep should sleep in a shed.” | switching between S and SH |
| R and L | “Truly rural, truly rural.” | R and L, hard for many learners of English |
| Kids | “Three free throws.” | short lines with TH, F, B and P for younger children |
With “All (60)” each tongue twister has a probability of 1 in 60, about 1.67%. The classics are traditional rhymes that have been passed on for generations; a few long ones are shortened to their first line.
Tongue twisters for English learners and speech practice
Teachers use tongue twisters as a warm-up for pronunciation: a minute of “Red lorry, yellow lorry” trains the switch between R and L, “Thin sticks, thick bricks” the TH sound. Actors and presenters use them to warm up before speaking. For speech therapy, ask a speech-language therapist which sounds to practise – the sets here are sorted by sound to make that easy, but they are not a therapy plan.
Tips for saying them faster
- Start slowly and speak every sound clearly; speed comes with repetition.
- Exaggerate the mouth movements, like a warm-up for the face.
- Clap a steady rhythm and speed it up a little each round.
- Record yourself on your phone and listen for the slip.
Write your own
Type one tongue twister per line – up to 500 lines of up to 80 characters each. Pick one sound and fill a sentence with it: names of classmates work well (“Mia’s mom makes mint muffins”). Your list stays in this browser; “Share this wheel” puts it into a link.

Frequently asked questions

Do tongue twisters help with pronunciation?
They are a popular warm-up for practising difficult sounds such as R and L, S and SH or TH. For speech problems, ask a speech-language therapist.
Can I add my own tongue twisters?
Yes. Type them in the text box, one per line. The list is saved in this browser.
How do I avoid hearing the same one twice?
Tick “Remove the winning entry from the wheel”. Every drawn line then leaves the wheel.
Can I use it on a projector in class?
Yes. The wheel runs in the browser on any device: connect it to the projector, spin, and the result is shown in large type.
