How it is calculated

Kakuro (also called cross sums) is a number puzzle that works like a crossword made of digits. The white squares take the digits 1 to 9; the clue squares give the sum of the run beside or below them. You never have to guess: every puzzle here has exactly one solution.

The rules

  1. Each run of white squares (across and down) adds up to the clue in front of it.
  2. No digit may appear twice in a run.
  3. Only the digits 1 to 9 are allowed; there is no zero.

The key combinations

Some sums allow only one set of digits, so that is where to start:

The line below the grid lists all possible combinations of both runs for the selected square and already accounts for digits you have entered.

How to proceed

First look for runs with a single possible combination, enter the digits that are certain and see which digits are ruled out in the crossing runs. If you get stuck, "Hint" shows a square with the reasoning. Size and level decide how many digits are given.

Frequently asked questions

How does Kakuro work?

The white squares take digits from 1 to 9. Each connected run must add up to the clue square in front of it, and no digit may repeat within a run.

What do the numbers in the black squares mean?

The number at the top right is the sum of the horizontal run to its right; the number at the bottom left is the sum of the vertical run below it.

Do you have to guess in Kakuro?

No. Every puzzle has exactly one solution that can be found by reasoning. The combination helper and the hint show which digits are still possible.

Which sums have only one solution?

For two squares 3, 4, 16 and 17; for three squares 6, 7, 23 and 24; for four squares 10, 11, 29 and 30. That is the best place to begin.

Is my progress saved?

No. The game runs entirely in your browser; nothing is stored or sent.
