Play Reversi online
In Reversi online you play on an 8 × 8 board against the computer: place a stone so that enemy stones are trapped between it and one of yours and they flip. Whoever has more stones at the end wins. Three levels, a hint button and undo, no sign-up and playable on a phone.

How it is calculated
In short: Reversi is a two-player board game invented in England in 1883. It is played on 8 × 8 squares with stones that are black on one side and white on the other. The starting position is the one in common use today: four stones in the centre, Black moves first.
The rules
- A move puts a stone on an empty square. It must trap at least one enemy stone in a row, column or diagonal between the new stone and one of your own.
- All trapped stones are flipped and then belong to the player who moved.
- If a player cannot move they pass. When neither can move, the game is over.
- The player with the most stones of their colour then wins.
How to play here
Choose level and colour. Squares with a dot show where a move is possible; you can switch the display off. “Hint” marks the best move found by the strong level, and “Undo move” takes back your last move together with the computer’s reply. The yellow square shows the last stone.
Strategy in brief
- Corners are strong: a stone in a corner can never be flipped.
- Avoid squares next to empty corners: playing there often hands the corner to your opponent.
- Mobility counts more than stone count: in the middle of the game it is good to have few stones and many possible moves.
The computer opponent
“Easy” looks one move ahead and plays with some randomness. “Medium” looks three moves ahead, “Hard” five; in the last moves it calculates exactly to the end of the game. It scores square values (corners high, squares before corners low) and the number of possible moves.
Frequently asked questions
How does Reversi work?
You place a stone so that enemy stones are trapped between it and one of your own. Those stones flip. Whoever has the most stones at the end wins.
Who goes first?
Black goes first. You can choose Black or White; if you play White the computer makes the first move.
What happens if I have no move?
Then you pass, the game tells you so and your opponent carries on. The game ends when neither player can move.
What is the difference between Reversi and Othello?
The rules are largely the same apart from the fixed starting position. Here the starting position with four stones in the centre applies, as is usual in Othello.
How do I beat the computer?
Take the corners, avoid squares next to empty corners and watch your mobility. With “Hint” you can see how the computer would rate a move.
Is anything stored or uploaded?
No. The game runs entirely in your browser; nothing is stored or sent.
