Yards to feet and feet to yards converter
Yards to feet is a multiplication by 3: 100 yd = 300 ft. Type yards and the feet follow as you type, with inches and meters underneath; feet to yards divides by 3 in the same box. Below the chart, the factors for square and cubic yards, which are not 3.
Example: Length 100 · Direction: Yards to feet (yd → ft) → Answer: 100 yd = 300 ft. Source: NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8 – inch = 0.0254 m, foot = 0.3048 m, yard = 0.9144 m, mile = 1.609344 km (exact, international agreement of 1959). Updated: .
How it is calculated
Length: multiply by 3
feet = yards × 3 and yards = feet ÷ 3. A yard is exactly three feet or 36 inches (0.9144 m). So 40 yd = 120 ft for the 40-yard dash, 25 yd = 75 ft for a 25-yard pool and 20 ft = 6.667 yd.
Square yards and cubic yards are not 3
The most expensive mistake on this page is using 3 for area or volume. One square yard is 3 ft × 3 ft = 9 square feet, and one cubic yard is 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet. Carpet is sold by the square yard: a room of 180 sq ft needs 180 ÷ 9 = 20 sq yd, not 60. Mulch, soil and concrete are sold by the cubic yard: a bed of 12 ft × 6 ft × 0.5 ft holds 36 cubic feet, which is only 36 ÷ 27 = 1.33 cubic yards. Dividing by 3 instead of 9 would make you order 60 sq yd instead of 20, three times too much.
Football fields and pools
An American football field is 100 yd between the goal lines, 300 ft, and 120 yd or 360 ft with both 10-yard end zones. A first down needs 10 yd, i.e. 30 ft. Short-course swimming in the US uses 25-yard pools of 75 ft. In golf, a 150-yard approach is 450 ft, or 137.2 m.
Fabric and the tape measure
Fabric is sold by the yard of 36 in. A 2.5 yd cut is 7.5 ft or 90 in. On a tape measure, 9 ft 6 in is 3 yd 0 ft 6 in, which as decimals is 3.167 yd.

Frequently asked questions
How many feet are in a yard?
Three. 1 yd = 3 ft, and one yard is also 36 inches.
How do I convert yards to feet?
Multiply by 3: 100 yd = 300 ft. To go back, divide by 3: 300 ft = 100 yd.
How many square feet are in a square yard?
Nine, because a square yard is 3 ft by 3 ft. A cubic yard holds 27 cubic feet.
How many yards is 10 feet?
10 ft = 3.333 yd, i.e. 3 yards and 1 foot.
How long is a football field in feet?
The 100 yards between the goal lines are 100 yd = 300 ft; with both end zones (120 yd) the field is 360 ft long.
