How it is calculated

How to convert meters to feet

feet = meters ÷ 0.3048, which is the same as meters × 3.28084. For 100 m: 100 ÷ 0.3048 = 328.08 ft – the length of a sprint track is a bit over 328 feet. Going back, meters = feet × 0.3048: 6 ft × 0.3048 = 1.829 m, and 100 ft = 30.48 m.

The figure 0.3048 is exact. Since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959, a yard is 0.9144 m and a foot is a third of it, 0.3048 m. One foot is 12 inches, one inch 25.4 mm.

Height: meters to feet and inches

People give their height as 5 ft 10 in, not as 5.9 feet. The converter therefore adds the form in feet and inches: 1.8 m = 5.906 ft = 5 ft 10.9 in. To do it by hand, divide the centimeters by 2.54 to get the inches in total (180 ÷ 2.54 = 70.9 in) and split by 12 (70.9 = 5 × 12 + 10.9).

A quick mental trick

Multiply meters by 3 and add 10 % – or just multiply by 3.3. 50 m gives 165 ft against 164.04 ft exact. In the other direction multiply feet by 0.3: 20 ft ≈ 6 m (exact 6.096 m). The error stays under 1 % when going to feet and under 2 % when going to meters, fine for estimates, not for plans.

Meters to feet chart

The chart in the results lists 0.5 m to 1,000 m. A few anchors: 2 m = 6.562 ft, 5 m = 16.404 ft, 10 m = 32.808 ft, 1,000 m = 3,280.84 ft. Landmarks: a basketball hoop at 10 ft is 3.048 m, a mile is 5,280 ft = 1,609.34 m, an airliner at 35,000 ft flies at 10,668 m, and Mount Everest, officially 8,848.86 m, reaches 29,031.69 ft.
