The IATA size is a guideline. Size, weight and number of pieces allowed are set by each airline, sometimes by fare and aircraft – check the details of your booking.

How it is calculated

As a guide for cabin baggage, the airline association IATA recommends a maximum of 56 × 45 × 25 cm, including wheels, handles and pockets. The checker compares your bag with that size or with your airline's.

How it is checked

Both sets of dimensions are sorted by size and compared in pairs: the longest side of the bag with the longest allowed side, the middle with the middle, the shortest with the shortest. So it does not matter in which order you enter length, width and height – the bag may be turned. If a side does not fit, the table shows the excess in centimeters or inches.

Measuring correctly

The IATA figure is voluntary. Which size applies to you is in your airline's conditions, and bags may be measured and weighed at check-in. More for your trip: the packing list, the weight converter for kilos and pounds, the length converter and the travel budget.

Frequently asked questions

How big can carry-on luggage be?

IATA recommends a maximum of 56 × 45 × 25 cm (22 × 18 × 10 in) including wheels, handles and pockets. The actual limit is set by each airline and is in your booking.

Does the size include the wheels?

The IATA guideline counts wheels, handles and pockets. So measure the bag at its largest extent.

May I turn the bag so that it fits?

Yes. The checker sorts the dimensions and compares the longest side with the longest limit. The order of length, width and height does not matter.

How much may carry-on luggage weigh?

Each airline sets its own weight limit; it is in your booking. Enter it under “My airline's own limit” and the checker will test it too.

What if my bag is too big?

It usually has to go in the hold, which may cost a fee. Check in advance whether a smaller bag or less filling will do.
