Cubic feet to cubic yards converter
Cubic feet to cubic yards: a cubic yard is 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet, so 100 ft³ = 3.7037 yd³. Type a volume and the cubic yards appear as you type, with cubic meters below; cubic yards to cubic feet works in the same box.
Example: Volume 100 · Direction: ft³ to yd³ → Answer: 100 ft³ = 3.7037 yd³. Source: NIST Special Publication 811, Appendix B.8: cubic foot = 2.831 685 E−02 m³, cubic yard = 7.645 549 E−01 m³ (read 15.10.2026). Updated: .
How it is calculated
How to convert cubic feet to cubic yards
yd³ = ft³ ÷ 27 and ft³ = yd³ × 27. A yard is 3 feet, so a cube of 1 yard on each side holds 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet. Divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards: 100 ft³ ÷ 27 = 3.7037 yd³, and 54 ft³ is exactly 2 yd³.
Conversion chart ft³ to yd³
| Cubic feet | Cubic yards |
|---|---|
| 1 | 0.037037 |
| 10 | 0.3704 |
| 27 | 1 |
| 50 | 1.8519 |
| 100 | 3.7037 |
| 270 | 10 |
Do not divide by 3 or 9
3 is the factor for lengths (1 yd = 3 ft) and 9 for areas (1 yd² = 9 ft²). Volumes need the cube, 27. Dividing 100 ft³ by 3 gives 33.3 instead of the correct 3.7 yd³, about nine times too much material.
Concrete, soil and mulch
Bulk material is ordered by the cubic yard, but you measure in feet. Work out the volume in cubic feet first: length × width × depth, with the depth in feet (4 in = 1/3 ft). A slab of 10 × 10 ft and 4 in thick is 33.33 ft³ = 1.2346 yd³. A 2 cu ft bag holds 0.0741 yd³, so one cubic yard equals 13.5 such bags. For the full job with waste allowance and bag counts use the concrete calculator, the mulch calculator or the gravel calculator; lengths convert with yards to feet.
Frequently asked questions
How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?
27. A cubic yard is 3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft = 27 ft³.
How do I convert cubic feet to cubic yards?
Divide by 27: 100 ft³ ÷ 27 = 3.7037 yd³.
How many cubic yards is 1 cubic foot?
1 ft³ = 0.037037 yd³ (1/27).
How many 2 cu ft bags make a cubic yard?
13.5 bags, because 27 ÷ 2 = 13.5. Round up to 14 when you buy.
How many cubic feet is 1 cubic meter?
1 m³ = 35.3147 ft³ = 1.3080 yd³, because 1 ft³ = 0.028316846592 m³.
