How it is calculated
How to convert inches to feet
feet = inches ÷ 12. For 100 in: 100 ÷ 12 = 8.3333 ft, which is 8 ft 4 in. Going back, inches = feet × 12: 6.5 ft × 12 = 78 in. Both steps are exact, because a foot is defined as exactly 12 inches (0.3048 m).
Decimal feet or feet and inches?
Heights, doors and rooms are spoken in feet and inches, plans and spreadsheets often use decimal feet – and the two are easy to mix up. 5.5 ft is 5 ft 6 in (66 in), not 5 ft 5 in. And 5 ft 10 in is 70 in = 5.8333 ft, not 5.10. The line “In feet and inches” shows the form you say aloud: 80 in is 6 ft 8 in, the standard interior door.
The area and volume trap
The factor 12 is for length only. One square foot is 144 square inches (12 × 12) and one cubic foot is 1,728 cubic inches (12 × 12 × 12). Dividing square inches by 12 gives a wrong answer by a factor of 12 – a common error when pricing flooring, glass or foam sold per square foot.
