How it is calculated
Converting PDF to Excel means bringing tables that exist in a PDF only as scattered text back into rows and columns. This tool reads the text and its positions from the PDF in your browser, detects columns from the gaps and writes an XLSX file (Office Open XML, ECMA-376). Numbers, percentages, currency amounts and dates are saved as real values, so Excel can calculate with them.
How it works
- Drop the PDF here or choose it.
- Choose whether each page, each table or everything together gets a sheet, and whether numbers use a decimal comma or point (automatic is preset).
- Click “Convert to Excel”, check the preview of the first table and download the XLSX file.
What works – and what does not
- Works well: PDFs with a text layer, such as those from Word, Excel, accounting and billing software, bank statements and price lists. The tool recognises a table by at least two consecutive rows with several columns separated by gaps.
- Works poorly or not at all: scanned PDFs (no text – text recognition has to come first), merged and multi-line cells, tables without recognisable column gaps, and columns closer together than about half a character. Ruling lines and colours are not evaluated.
Limits
Always check the result briefly in Excel before you calculate with it – especially amounts from bank statements and invoices.
- Up to 200 MB and 300 pages per run. Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened.
- The number format is estimated from the cells; with mixed formats, choose it yourself. Leading zeros and very long digit strings stay as text.
Correcting columns, and CSV
The preview shows the first detected table before you download anything. If two columns stick together, set column separation to “Fine” and convert again; if words fall apart into separate columns, “Coarse” helps. Besides the XLSX file you can download the same tables as CSV (comma-separated, decimal point, dates as YYYY-MM-DD) – with several sheets as a ZIP holding one CSV per sheet.
Privacy
The PDF never leaves your device. Only the PDF engine pdf.js (Apache-2.0) and the XLSX writer are loaded from this server. Next steps: CSV to Excel, Excel to PDF or PDF to DOCX.
Frequently asked questions
How can I convert PDF to Excel for free?
Drop the PDF here, check the options and click “Convert to Excel”. You download the XLSX file straight away – no account and no upload.
Can I convert PDF to Excel without uploading the file?
Yes. The detection runs entirely in your browser and the PDF is not sent to a server.
Why is no table detected?
Usually the PDF is a scan without a text layer, or the columns are too close together. For scans, recognise the text first with “PDF to DOCX” (with OCR).
Are numbers kept as numbers?
Yes. Numbers, percentages, amounts with currency signs and dates are saved as real values; the number format is detected automatically or chosen by you.
Is the table formatting kept?
No. Rows, columns and values are taken over, not colours, borders or merged cells. Check the result briefly in Excel.
Does it work with several tables on one page?
Yes. Each detected table is kept apart; depending on the setting they end up in one sheet per page, in one shared sheet or in a sheet each.
