Merge and compress PDF files in one step

This chain lets you merge and compress PDF files without downloading anything in between: drop your files (JPG and PNG work too), set the order, pick the compression level and page numbers – and get one smaller PDF with continuous numbering. Everything runs in your browser.

      How the PDF chain works

      1. Merge: all pages of your PDFs in the order you choose; photos and scans (JPG, PNG) become A4 pages. Reorder with the arrows, remove with ✕.
      2. Compress: images inside the PDF are downscaled and re-saved as JPEG. Text, links and forms stay intact. If the file does not get smaller, the chain keeps the previous version.
      3. Page numbers: continuous across all merged pages, e.g. “Page 3 of 12”, centred, right or outside for double-sided printing.

Every step can be switched off. Intermediate results stay in your device’s memory; only the final file is downloaded. You can also pass the finished PDF straight to another tool – to sign it, add a watermark, split it or turn it into JPGs – without uploading it again.

Why a chain instead of three tools?

Job applications, forms and expense bundles almost always need the same sequence: several files into one, small enough for a portal’s upload limit or an email attachment, and numbered so nothing gets mixed up. Done separately, that is three downloads and three new uploads. Here it is one click. The engines are the same as in our Merge PDF, Compress PDF and Add Page Numbers tools.

      Limits

Up to 50 files, 200 MB each. Encrypted PDFs must be unlocked first. Text-only PDFs without images barely shrink – for those, the stronger method in Compress PDF (pages to images) is the only option. Form fields and bookmarks of the individual files are not fully carried over when merging.

      Frequently asked questions

How do I merge and compress several PDFs at once?

Drop all files above, check the order, leave “Compress” switched on and click “Start chain”. The chain merges first and then compresses the images of the combined PDF – no download in between.

      Are my files uploaded?

No. Merging, compressing and numbering run in JavaScript in your browser. Your files never leave your device – not even with “Continue with …”: the PDF is kept briefly in this browser’s storage until the next tool opens it.

Can I combine photos and PDFs?

Yes. Each JPG or PNG becomes one A4 page; rotated phone photos are straightened automatically.

      Is the text still searchable?

Yes. The chain only compresses images. Text stays text, and page numbers are added as real text.

Why did my PDF barely get smaller?

It probably contains few photos and mostly text or vector graphics, which are already compact. The “Strong” level helps with scans; text-only files cannot shrink much.
