    How it is calculated

    In short: A meme is an image with a short, usually funny caption – classically white text with a black outline at the top and bottom. This meme generator sets your text in the largest size that fits its box and saves the result as PNG or JPG. Your photo and text never leave your device.

    How it works

    1. Type the top and bottom text. Long sentences wrap and shrink until they fit.
    2. Drag in your own photo, pick one, or paste it with Ctrl + V – or choose a background (sunburst, confetti, polka dots …) and set the aspect ratio for feed or story.
    3. Pick a template: classic (text on the image), white caption bar on top (the style of many current memes) or poster with a black frame and title.
    4. Click “Save meme” and download. On phones a “Share image” button appears, which sends the meme straight to WhatsApp, Instagram, Messages or Telegram.

    Background: why white text with a black outline?

    White letters with a dark outline stay readable on light and dark parts of a picture because every edge has strong contrast. The outline here is 8 % of the font size. The font “Anton” looks like the well-known meme typeface but is licensed under the free SIL Open Font License and only loads when needed. Drawing uses the browser’s canvas API (WHATWG HTML); sharing uses the W3C Web Share API.

    Every text can be moved in the preview with the mouse or a finger. “Add text box” gives you up to six more texts – for labels in several places on the picture. For the selected text you set the size (40–250%), text colour, outline colour and alignment; the outline can also be switched off. Crop your own photo to 1:1, 4:5, 16:9 or 9:16 around the centre – nothing is upscaled. The meme saves as PNG or JPG without a visible watermark.

    Honest limits

    We deliberately ship no library of famous meme images from films or TV – other people own those pictures. The backgrounds here are generated by code and free to use. If you upload someone else’s photo, you are responsible for the rights; parody and fair-use rules differ from country to country, and people shown in a photo keep their personal rights. Animated GIF memes are not supported.

    Photo and text are processed in your browser only; nothing is uploaded. Only the template, background, format and font are remembered locally – your text is not.

    How do I make a meme with my own picture?

    Is this meme generator free and without watermark?

    Yes. No account, no subscription and no visible watermark. Only the PNG metadata names “ToolboxDay (toolboxday.com)” as the software.

    What font do memes use?

    Classic memes use a condensed, bold all-caps typeface in white with a black outline. Here that is “Anton” (SIL Open Font License); Bebas Neue, Bangers, DM Serif Display, Caveat and your system font are also available.

    Why are there no templates like Drake or SpongeBob?

    Those images come from music videos and TV shows, and third parties own the rights. We only offer backgrounds we drew ourselves. You can always use your own photos.

    What size should a meme be for Instagram?

    For the feed 1:1 (1080 × 1080 px) or 4:5 (1080 × 1350 px); for stories and reels 9:16 (1080 × 1920 px). With your own photo, the meme keeps the photo’s aspect ratio.

    Can I add text above the picture instead of on it?

    Yes – choose the template “White caption bar above the image”. The top text then sits in black on a white bar and the picture stays uncovered.
