Miles to meters and meters to miles converter
Miles to meters: one mile is exactly 1,609.344 m, so 3 mi = 4,828.032 m. Type miles and the meters appear while you type, with kilometers and feet underneath; meters to miles works in the same box.
Example: Distance 3 · Direction: Miles to meters (mi → m) → Answer: 3 mi = 4,828.032 m. Source: NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8 – inch = 0.0254 m, foot = 0.3048 m, yard = 0.9144 m, mile = 1.609344 km (exact, international agreement of 1959). Updated: .
How it is calculated
The factor
meters = miles × 1,609.344, and miles = meters ÷ 1,609.344. The factor follows from the 1959 definitions: a yard is 0.9144 m and a mile is 1,760 yards, so 1,760 × 0.9144 = 1,609.344. So 0.5 mi = 804.672 m, 13.1 mi = 21,082.406 m and, back again, 5,000 m = 3.107 mi.
The mile on the track
A standard outdoor track is 400 m round, so one lap is 0.2485 mile and four laps are 1,600 m, which is 0.9942 mi - about 9.3 m short of a true mile. A race billed as “the mile” on a 400 m track needs 4 laps plus 9.34 m. The 1,500 m, the metric near-mile, is 0.9321 mi. That is why a time for the 1,600 m is slightly easier than a mile time.
Road races in miles and meters
A 5K is 5,000 m (3.107 mi), a 10K is 6.214 mi, a half marathon of 21,097.5 m is 13.109 mi and a marathon of 42,195 m is 26.219 mi, or 26 miles 385 yards. A runner asked to do “a 3 mile tempo run” covers 4,828.032 m; on a 400 m track that is 12.07 laps.
Mental estimate
Multiply miles by 1,600, or take 1.6 km per mile and add three zeros. The error is 0.6 % low: 10 mi gives 16,000 m against 16,093.44 m exact. Over long distances that is a couple of hundred meters, so use the exact factor for navigation and race planning.
