Caffeine calculator

This caffeine calculator adds up the caffeine from your coffee, tea, cola, energy drinks and chocolate and compares the total with the levels the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) considers safe. For healthy adults that is up to 400 mg a day – about 4 cups of filter coffee at 90 mg each.

EFSA: single doses up to 200 mg (about 3 mg per kg) raise no safety concerns for healthy adults. 100 mg can affect sleep in some adults, especially close to bedtime. Estimate: caffeine content varies with the coffee, the brewing and the brand – the values are EFSA’s approximate figures. Not medical advice.

How it is calculated

Caffeine = number of drinks × caffeine per drink. The calculator uses the approximate amounts from EFSA’s overview “How much caffeine is there in…” and compares the total with EFSA’s safe levels from its 2015 scientific opinion.
