How the calculator works
All Mondays to Fridays (optionally Saturdays) of the year are counted, minus the statutory public holidays of the selected state that fall on those days. Holidays on a weekend do not cost a working day. Christmas Eve (24 Dec) and New Year's Eve (31 Dec) are not public holidays. Only German Unity Day is set by federal law; all other holidays are regulated by the states.
Example 2026, North Rhine-Westphalia, Monday to Friday: 365 calendar days − 104 weekend days = 261 weekdays. Eight holidays fall on a weekday (German Unity Day and Boxing Day are Saturdays, All Saints' Day is a Sunday), leaving 253 working days.

Public holidays in Germany 2026
Nine holidays apply nationwide: New Year's Day (Thu, 1 Jan), Good Friday (3 Apr), Easter Monday (6 Apr), Labour Day (Fri, 1 May), Ascension Day (Thu, 14 May), Whit Monday (25 May), German Unity Day (Sat, 3 Oct), Christmas Day (Fri, 25 Dec) and Boxing Day (Sat, 26 Dec). Movable holidays follow Easter Sunday: 5 April in 2026, 28 March in 2027. Popular bridge days in 2026 are Friday 2 January, Friday 15 May and – where Corpus Christi is a holiday – Friday 5 June.

How are working days calculated?
Calendar days minus Saturdays and Sundays (only Sundays on a six-day week) minus the public holidays of the state that fall on a weekday. 2026 in North Rhine-Westphalia: 365 − 104 − 8 = 253.
Are Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve public holidays in Germany?
No. They are regular working days by law, although many employers give the day or half a day off.
Why do working days differ between German states?
Apart from German Unity Day, public holidays are set by each state. States with Epiphany, Corpus Christi or the Day of Repentance and Prayer have fewer working days when those holidays fall on a weekday.
How do I count working days between two dates?
Count Monday to Friday in the period (the time calculator shows this as "Weekdays Mon–Fri") and subtract the public holidays of the state that fall on a weekday. 1 Oct to 31 Dec 2026 in North Rhine-Westphalia: 66 − 1 (Christmas Day, a Friday) = 65. In Excel or Google Sheets, =NETWORKDAYS(start, end, holidays) does the same, counting both days.
