How it is calculated
How the date of Easter is calculated
Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox. The churches do not use the astronomical moon for this but fixed tables: the equinox is always taken as March 21, and the “paschal full moon” follows from the 19-year lunar cycle. That is why Easter Sunday always falls between March 22 and April 25, as the U.S. Naval Observatory explains.
This tool uses the Gauss Easter algorithm in the version by Heiner Lichtenberg published by Germany’s national metrology institute (PTB). It gives the right date for every year of the Gregorian calendar from 1583; we checked it for every year up to 4099 against a second, independent algorithm. The full calculation is shown below the result.
Movable feasts
All movable feasts follow Easter: Ash Wednesday is 46 days before, Mardi Gras 47, Good Friday 2. Ascension Day comes 39 days after Easter Sunday (always a Thursday), Pentecost 49 days and Corpus Christi 60 days after. Good Friday is a bank holiday in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and Easter Monday in all of them except Scotland; in the US Easter is not a federal holiday.
Orthodox Easter
Orthodox churches still compute Easter with the Julian calendar, so their date is often one or five weeks later and sometimes the same Sunday – as in 2025 and 2028.
Limits
Before 1583 the Julian calendar applied, so earlier years are not calculated. For other date questions use the date calculator; for a full-year overview, the printable 2027 calendar.
Frequently asked questions
When is Easter 2027?
Easter Sunday 2027 is March 28. Good Friday is March 26 and Easter Monday March 29, 2027.
When is Easter 2028?
Easter Sunday 2028 falls on April 16, with Good Friday on April 14. In 2028 Western and Orthodox Christians celebrate on the same day.
Why does Easter change every year?
Because it is tied to the first full moon of spring. A lunar month (about 29.5 days) does not fit evenly into the solar year, so the date moves between March 22 and April 25.
What are the earliest and latest possible Easter dates?
The earliest is March 22 (last in 1818, next in 2285), the latest April 25 (last in 1943, next in 2038).

Ash Wednesday is always 46 days before Easter Sunday, Pentecost 49 days after. In 2027 that is February 10 and May 16.
