How the Christmas countdown works
The target is the start of Christmas Day, December 25 at 12:00 a.m. local time. The remaining time is recalculated every second from the target date and the current time. In the US the clocks fall back on the first Sunday in November, so from then on the countdown contains one hour more than a plain day count.
Example: On October 1, 2026 there are 85 days left until Christmas – 12 weeks and 1 day. Christmas Eve is one day earlier.
