Tip pool calculator: share tips fairly by hours worked

This tip pool calculator splits tips among your team: enter the total, then each person’s hours and – if you like – a weight, for example for part-timers or shift leads. Optionally part of the pool goes to the kitchen or bar. Amounts are rounded and shared out so the total is exact to the cent.

How it is calculated

In a tip pool each person gets a share by the hours they worked – weighted if needed. The calculator splits the amount so nothing is left over.

How it is calculated

Example

$600 in tips with a 10% tip-out leaves $540 for four people with 32, 28, 16 (weight 0.5) and 24 hours: points 32, 28, 8 and 24 – Sam gets about $188, Alex $164, Jo $47 and Taylor $141.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split tips fairly in a team?

Most commonly by hours worked, with a weight for part-timers or shift leads if needed. The calculator splits by hours times weight or, if you prefer, equally.

What does the weight mean?

It makes hours worth different amounts: 1 is normal, 0.5 for example for part-timers, 2 for a shift lead. Without a value it is 1.

How does the tip-out to kitchen or bar work?

A percentage of the tips is taken off first and shown separately. The rest is shared among the people on the list.

Why is the total exact to the cent?

Amounts are rounded to the step you choose. Any remainder goes to the people with the largest remainders until the total is exact.

How do I enter the list?

One person per line, for example “Sam; 32” or “Jo; 16; 0.5”. You can also paste rows from a spreadsheet, separated by tabs.

Are my entries private?

Yes. Everything is calculated in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
