How it is calculated
The premium is hourly rate times hours times premium rate. At a $20 hourly rate and 40 night hours with a 25% premium that is $200 a month.
How it is calculated
- Premium per type: hours × hourly rate × rate ÷ 100. You enter the rates from your contract.
- Gross: hourly rate × all hours plus all premiums.
- Hourly rate with premium: hourly rate × (1 + rate).
Where the rates come from
Premium rates differ by country, industry, employment contract and union agreement. The values pre-filled here are examples only; replace them with the figures from your contract or pay slip. The calculator adds the premium on top of the base pay for every premium hour and shows the total gross before tax and deductions.
- Check how your contract defines night hours, for example 22:00 to 06:00.
- If premiums overlap, for example a night hour on a Sunday, check whether they add up or only the higher one applies – enter the hours under one type or the other accordingly.
The calculator does not replace a payroll calculation. Your entries stay in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate night shift differential?
Hours times hourly rate times the premium rate. At $20 an hour, 40 night hours and 25% it is $200 a month. Your contract gives the rate.
What rate should I enter?
The one in your employment or union contract. The pre-filled values are only examples and differ by country and employer.
Do I subtract the premium hours from the total hours?
No. Enter all hours worked as the total, including the premium hours. Base pay is paid on all of them and the premium is added.
What if a night hour falls on a Sunday?
Check your contract: premiums may add up or only the higher one may count. Enter the hour under the type that applies.
Is the result what I will receive?
It is the gross extra pay. Tax and social contributions are deducted afterwards, and the amount depends on your situation.
Are my entries private?
Yes. Everything is calculated in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
