How it is calculated
How to convert hourly pay to salary
Annual salary = hourly wage × hours per week × 52. A full-time 40-hour week is 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours a year.
Example: $25 an hour × 2,080 = $52,000 a year. That is $4,333.33 a month, $1,000 a week and $200 a day (8 hours).
How to convert salary to hourly
Hourly wage = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × 52). A $60,000 salary at 40 hours a week works out to $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour.
A quick rule of thumb: at 40 hours a week, halve the hourly wage and read it as thousands per year – $25 an hour ≈ $50,000 (exactly $52,000).
2,080 or 2,087 hours?
US federal agencies divide annual pay by 2,087 hours, the average number of workdays × 8 hours per calendar year over the 28-year calendar cycle – some years have 260, others 261 or 262 weekdays (U.S. Office of Personnel Management). To use it, set the paid weeks per year to 52.175 (40 × 52.175 = 2,087): $60,000 then becomes $28.75 an hour.
Monthly pay
A month is one twelfth of a year, i.e. 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33 weeks – not 4. At 40 hours that is 173.33 paid hours per month. If your employer pays a fixed number of hours per month, choose “fixed hours per month”.
Gross, not take-home pay
All results are before income tax, payroll taxes and deductions such as health insurance or retirement contributions, which depend on your state, filing status and benefits. Unpaid time off lowers your annual pay – subtract those weeks from the 52.
