Tennis scoreboard online

This tennis scoreboard keeps score the way an umpire would: tap the player who won the point and the board moves through 15, 30, 40, deuce and advantage, adds up games and sets, starts the tie-break at six games all and shows who is serving. Handy for club matches, school fixtures, parents on the sideline and anyone still learning how tennis scoring works.

How it is calculated

In tennis a game is counted 15, 30, 40 and game; at 40–40 (deuce) a player needs two points in a row. Six games with a lead of two win a set, a tie-break decides at 6–6, and two sets win a best-of-three match. This tennis scoreboard does all of that from a single tap per point.

How to use the tennis scoreboard

  1. Enter the names, pick the format and who serves first.
  2. After each point tap “Point …” for the player who won it. The board shows the points of the current game, the games of each set and a ball next to the server.
  3. “Undo” takes back the last point – as often as you like, back to the first point of the match.
  4. “Full screen” turns a tablet or laptop at the court into a scoreboard for spectators.

Tennis scoring explained

LevelHow it is won
Pointcalled 15, 30, 40; no points is “love”
Gamefour points with a lead of two; from 40–40 (deuce): advantage, then game
Setsix games with a lead of two (6–4, 7–5); at 6–6 a tie-break game
Tie-breakcounted 1, 2, 3 …; first to seven points with a lead of two; the set is recorded 7–6
Matchbest of three sets (two sets win) – or a single set

Example: at 40–40 the score is deuce. The next point gives one player the advantage, shown as AD. If that player wins the following point too, the game is theirs; if not, the score returns to deuce.

Shorter formats: no-ad, short sets and the match tie-break

The Rules of Tennis list alternative scoring methods that clubs, schools and doubles events use to keep matches short. All three can be switched on above:

Who serves?

The serve changes after every game. In a tie-break the first server serves one point, then the players serve two points each in turn. The player who served first in the tie-break receives in the first game of the next set. The ball symbol on the board follows these rules, so you never have to work it out at the changeover.

What the board does not do

It follows the standard formats above. Best-of-five matches, advantage final sets without a tie-break and the timing of changes of ends are not built in. Pairs can enter both names in one box – scoring in doubles is the same, but the board does not track which partner serves.

Sharing

The match is stored point by point in the page, so the score is still there after a reload. The share button sends the score as a link – useful for the team’s WhatsApp group during league fixtures. Player names are never written into the page address. For a club competition, combine this with the tournament bracket generator; for other racket sports there are the table tennis scoreboard, the badminton scoreboard and the pickleball scoreboard.

Frequently asked questions

Why is tennis scored 15, 30, 40?

Those are simply the traditional names for the first, second and third point of a game. The fourth point wins the game unless the score is 40–40.

What does deuce mean?

Deuce is 40–40. From there a player must win two points in a row: the first gives the advantage, the second wins the game. If the opponent wins the next point instead, it is deuce again.

What does AD mean on the scoreboard?

AD stands for advantage: the player has won the point after deuce and needs one more point for the game.

How does a tie-break work?

At 6–6 a tie-break game is played. Points are counted 1, 2, 3 and so on; the first to seven with a lead of two wins the set 7–6. The serve changes after the first point and then after every two points.

What is no-ad scoring?

At deuce only one more point is played – the deciding point – and its winner takes the game. Select “No-ad: one deciding point” to use it.

What is a match tie-break?

A tie-break to 10 points, won by two, that replaces the deciding set when the score is one set all. Tick the box above to use it.

How many sets are played?

This scoreboard offers best of three sets or a single set. Best-of-five matches are not supported.

Can I use it for doubles?

Yes. Scoring is the same in doubles. Type both partners into one name box.
