Winning Percentage Calculator

This winning percentage calculator turns a win–loss record into a percentage and the three-decimal form used in North American standings. Ties count as half a win, as a game without a win or not at all; there is also the 3-1-0 points percentage, and the calculator shows how many straight wins reach a target.

Example: Wins 30 · Losses 15 · Ties / draws 5 · How ties count: Half a win (standard) · Target winning percentage (%) 70 → Result: Winning percentage 65.0 % (.650) · record 30–15–5. Source: Wikipedia, Winning percentage: (wins + 0.5 · ties) ÷ total games; 30–20 = .600, 30–15–5 = .650; three decimals in North America; draws not counted as half wins for football managers; NFL before 1972 disregarded ties; points percentage (three points for a win) (read 15.10.2026). Calculated as (wins + ½ × ties) ÷ games – the usual rule in the NFL and most standings.

How it is calculated

Winning percentage = (wins + ½ × ties) ÷ games played. A 30–20 record is 30 ÷ 50 = 60 %, written .600 in standings. With 30 wins, 15 losses and 5 ties the ties count as 2.5 wins: 32.5 ÷ 50 = 65 % or .650.

The last two rows are equal today. Before 1972 the NFL left ties out, so 10–2–2 was 10 ÷ 12 and ranked ahead of 11–3.

Three ways to count ties

Leagues that rank by points (3 for a win, 1 for a draw) use the points percentage instead: points won ÷ points possible, so 30–15–5 gives 95 ÷ 150 = 63.3 %. Choose the rule “points percentage” for it. For player ratings in chess and other games see the Elo calculator; any other share is quick with the percentage calculator.

Wins needed for a target

To lift a record of W counted wins in N games to a target t you need k straight wins with (W + k) ÷ (N + k) ≥ t, so k = (t × N − W) ÷ (1 − t), rounded up. A 30–20 team needs 17 straight wins for 70 %.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate winning percentage?

Divide wins by games played; ties usually count as half a win. 30 wins and 20 losses give 30 ÷ 50 = .600, or 60 %.

How do ties affect winning percentage?

In most standings a tie counts as half a win and half a loss: 30–15–5 becomes 32.5 ÷ 50 = .650.

Why is winning percentage written as .600?

North American standings use a decimal with three places and read it like a whole number (“six hundred”). .600 is the same as 60 %.

What does .500 mean?

As many wins as losses. Games over .500 are wins minus losses.

How many wins do I need to reach a winning percentage?

k = (target × games − wins) ÷ (1 − target), rounded up, if all next games are won. From 30–20 that is 17 wins for 70 %.
