Color wheel: which color is it?
Ten colors, one spin: the wheel picks a color fairly – for hunting games, craft sessions or your next drawing prompt.
How it is calculated
The wheel comes preloaded with ten basic colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, brown, black and white. Each has exactly 10% chance. You can delete colors, add your own (turquoise, gold or grey, say) or make individual colors come up more often.
How it works
- Press "Spin the wheel" – the color is shown as soon as the wheel stops.
- Need two or three random colors? Switch on "Remove the winning entry from the wheel" and spin two or three times – no color repeats.
- Delete or add colors, one per line in the text box. The list is stored in the link, so you can share your wheel.
The wheel picks color names, not color codes. If you need a random hex value like #3A7BD5 for design work, type the codes you want as entries.
Game ideas for kids
- Color hunt: the wheel lands on "Green" – everyone has 30 seconds to find something green and bring it back. First one back scores a point. Works indoors or in the garden and practices color names along the way.
- I spy: instead of choosing a color yourself, let the wheel set it. That way even the youngest player can join in without having to think one up.
- Rainbow breakfast: which fruit or vegetable matches the color you spun? A playful way to get something new onto the plate.
DIY Twister with two wheels
Lost the Twister spinner? Lay colored paper, cushions or towels on the floor. This wheel picks the color, and a second standard wheel picks the body part – with "Left hand", "Right hand", "Left foot" and "Right foot" (25% each). Trim the color list down to the colors actually on the floor.
Drawing and creative challenges
- One-color drawing: the picture may only use the color you spun and its shades.
- Two spins: background and main subject each get a random color – often a surprising combination.
- Outfit challenge: today you have to wear one item in the color you spun.
Weighting colors
Type Red *2 and red counts twice. With ten colors that makes 11 shares: red then has 2/11 = 18.18%, every other color 1/11 = 9.09%. Handy when one color is especially common in the room, or when you want rare colors to come up less often.
Frequently asked questions
How likely is each color?
With the ten preset colors, each has exactly 10%. Remove or add colors and the wheel re-divides automatically – with eight colors it's 12.5% each.
Can I use it as a Twister spinner?
Yes. Keep only the colors on your playing mat and spin a second wheel for the body part with "Left hand", "Right hand", "Left foot" and "Right foot".
Can the same color come up twice in a row?
It can, because each spin is independent of the last. If you want to avoid repeats, delete the color you just drew from the list after each spin.
How do I get two or three random colors?
Switch on "Remove the winning entry from the wheel" and spin several times. Each drawn color leaves the wheel, so the colors are guaranteed to differ. "Drawn so far" shows the combination.
Can I add more colors, like turquoise or gold?
Yes, just type each one as a new line. The wheel re-divides automatically – with eleven colors each has 9.09%.
Does the wheel give hex or RGB codes?
No, it comes with color names. You can enter any codes such as #FF0000 as entries, and the wheel will pick one of them.
Is there an alternative without a wheel?
For six colors a die works too: assign a color to each number and every color has 16.67%.
