TV viewing distance calculator

This TV viewing distance calculator uses the factors published by the ITU: sit 1.5 times the picture height away from a 4K screen and 3.1 times from a 1080p screen, and one pixel fills exactly one arc-minute of your vision. Enter the diagonal to get the distance, or enter your distance in feet or meters to get the matching screen size.

Example: What do you want to calculate: Viewing distance from screen size · Screen diagonal 55 in · Distance unit: Feet · Resolution: 4K UHD (3840 × 2160) → Result: 3.4 ft (1.03 m) for a 55-inch 4K UHD TV. Calculated with the ITU factors from ITU-R BT.2246 for a picture height of 68.5 cm (16:9). Closer than this the pixel grid becomes visible; farther away you no longer see every detail of the resolution.

How it is calculated

The optimal viewing distance is the distance at which one pixel covers exactly one arc-minute of your field of vision. The ITU (International Telecommunication Union) states it in picture heights H: 3.1 H for 1080p, 1.5 H for 4K and 0.75 H for 8K. Sit closer and you see the pixel grid; sit farther away and your eyes can no longer resolve everything the screen shows.

The other way round: at 6 ft a 98-inch 4K or a 47-inch 1080p screen meets the ITU condition, at 8 ft it is 131 or 63 inches, at 10 ft 163 or 79 inches. The ITU report names 2 to 3 m as the typical TV distance and describes a 52-inch HDTV watched from about 7 feet (2.1 m); the calculator gives 2.01 m for a 52-inch 1080p set. To use the full detail of 4K from a sofa, you need a very large picture or a projector.

How it is calculated

For 16:9 the picture height is H = diagonal × 9 / √(16² + 9²), with 1 inch = 2.54 cm. A 55-inch TV is therefore 68.5 cm high; times 1.5 gives 1.03 m for 4K. Width, height and pixel density of your screen are shown by the screen size calculator; to convert inches, use inches to cm.

Frequently asked questions

How far should I sit from a 55-inch TV?

About 3.4 ft (1.03 m) for 4K and about 7 ft (2.12 m) for 1080p. From that distance on, single pixels are no longer visible according to ITU-R BT.2246.

What size TV for 10 feet?

163 inches for the full sharpness of 4K, 79 inches for 1080p. A smaller TV is fine, it just cannot show every detail from 10 ft.

Why is the distance so much shorter for 4K?

4K has twice as many lines as 1080p, so each pixel is half as tall and you can sit half as far away: 1.5 H instead of 3.1 H.

What does H mean?

H is the height of the visible picture. 1.5 H means a distance of 1.5 times the picture height.

Does this work for computer monitors?

Yes, for any 16:9 screen. A 27-inch 4K monitor meets the ITU condition at about 50 cm (20 inches).

Is sitting too close harmful?

The ITU values only describe picture sharpness, not a health limit. Too close and you see pixels, too far and you waste resolution.
