Pixels to cm

This converter turns pixels to cm. You need the resolution in dpi, pixels per inch: a photo 3000 pixels wide is exactly 25.4 cm wide at 300 dpi, but 79.4 cm at 96 dpi, the value used for screens.

How it is calculated

Pixels to cm – how the conversion works

A pixel has no fixed size. Only the resolution says how many pixels fit into one inch (2.54 cm). So cm = pixels ÷ dpi × 2.54 and the other way round pixels = cm ÷ 2.54 × dpi. Example: 3000 px at 300 dpi is 10 inches, which is 25.4 cm.

Which resolution to use

Print size of an image

In the print size mode you see how large an image with given pixel dimensions can be printed, and which ISO paper sizes from A6 to A2 it covers at the chosen resolution. An image of 4000 × 3000 px gives 33.9 × 25.4 cm at 300 dpi and is enough for A4.

Limits

The dpi value stored in an image file is only a note and changes no pixels. Print sharpness also depends on the subject, the printer and the viewing distance, so the quality levels are rules of thumb. On screens the device scaling matters, not the dpi field.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert pixels to cm?

Divide the pixels by the resolution in dpi and multiply by 2.54. 1000 pixels at 300 dpi is 8.47 cm.

How big is one pixel in cm?

It depends on the resolution: at 96 dpi a pixel is about 0.0265 cm, at 300 dpi about 0.0085 cm.

How many pixels do I need for printing?

For 300 dpi divide the length in cm by 2.54 and multiply by 300. For A4 (21 × 29.7 cm) that is 2480 × 3508 pixels.

How many dpi are good for printed photos?

About 300 dpi for close viewing. Large posters often work with 150 dpi or less.

How do I convert pixels to cm in Excel?

Use =A1/B1*2.54 with pixels in A1 and dpi in B1. This calculator also shows mm, inches and a table for other dpi values.
