These are avoirdupois ounces and pounds: 1 lb = 16 oz exactly. Fluid ounces measure volume and troy ounces (gold, silver) are about 9.7 % heavier, so neither fits this chart.

How it is calculated

The one-step rule

ounces = pounds × 16 and pounds = ounces ÷ 16. Both numbers are exact: the avoirdupois pound is defined as 0.45359237 kg and the ounce as one sixteenth of it, 28.349523125 g. So 3 lb = 48 oz, 2.5 lb = 40 oz and, going back, 40 oz = 2.5 lb.

Decimal pounds versus pounds and ounces

The most common slip is reading 7.5 lb as 7 lb 5 oz. The part after the decimal point is a fraction of a pound, not a count of ounces: 0.5 lb is 8 oz, so 7.5 lb is 7 lb 8 oz. Quarter pounds are easy to remember: 0.25 lb = 4 oz, 0.75 lb = 12 oz. In the other direction, take away whole pounds first: 53 oz = 3.313 lb (3.3125 before rounding), which is 3 lb 5 oz, because 53 − 3 × 16 = 5. The converter does that split for you under the answer and carries over correctly (you will never see 16 oz next to a pound count).

Three different ounces

This page is about the avoirdupois ounce used for groceries, parcels and body weight. A fluid ounce measures volume (about 29.57 mL for a US fl oz), so a “12 oz can” of soda holds volume, not weight. A troy ounce, used for gold and silver, is 31.1034768 g, roughly 9.7 % more than the 28.3495 g avoirdupois ounce; a troy pound has only 12 of them. If a price quote says “per oz” for a precious metal, it means troy.

Frequently asked questions

How many ounces are in a pound?

Exactly 16 avoirdupois ounces. Half a pound is 8 oz, a quarter pound 4 oz and three quarters of a pound 12 oz.

How many ounces is 1.5 lbs?

1.5 lb = 24 oz. Multiply the pounds by 16: 1.5 × 16 = 24.

How do I turn 53 oz into pounds and ounces?

Divide by 16: 53 oz = 3.313 lb, the same as 3 lb 5 oz (3 × 16 = 48, and 53 − 48 = 5 oz left over).

Is an ounce of weight the same as a fluid ounce?

No. A fluid ounce is a volume (29.57 mL in the US, 28.41 mL in the UK). A weight ounce is 28.35 g. Only for water are they close: a US fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.04 oz.

Are troy ounces different from the ounces in lbs to oz?

Yes. A troy ounce is 31.1034768 g, about 9.7 % heavier than the 28.349523125 g avoirdupois ounce, and there are 12 troy ounces to a troy pound instead of 16.
