Tons to lbs converter
Tons to lbs is a single multiplication: the US ton (short ton) is exactly 2,000 pounds. Enter a weight and the pounds appear as you type, with kilograms and metric tonnes below; pounds to tons works in the same box.
Example: Weight 1 · Direction: US tons to pounds → Answer: 1 ton = 2,000 lb. Source: NIST Special Publication 811, Appendix B.8: ton, short (2000 lb) = 9.071 847 E+02 kg, ton, long (2240 lb) = 1.016 047 E+03 kg, ton, metric = 1.0 E+03 kg (read 15.10.2026). Updated: .
How it is calculated
How to convert tons to lbs
Pounds = tons × 2,000 and tons = pounds ÷ 2,000. In the United States “ton” means the short ton, defined as exactly 2,000 avoirdupois pounds. Half a ton is 1,000 lb, 2.5 tons are 5,000 lb, and a load of 7,500 pounds is 3.75 tons. Because the factor is a whole number, the converter only rounds for display.

Short ton, long ton and metric tonne
Three different units share the name. The short ton (US) is 2,000 lb or 907.18474 kg. The long ton used in Britain is 2,240 lb, 1.12 short tons. The metric tonne is 1,000 kg, which is 2,204.6226 lb or 1.1023 short tons. Shipping papers, steel and grain prices from abroad usually mean metric tonnes; US truck scales, gravel and hay mean short tons. The converter shows the kilograms and metric tonnes below the answer, and lbs to kg handles smaller weights.
Common mistakes
Multiplying by 2,200 treats the figure as metric tonnes; for a 20-ton load that gives 44,000 instead of 40,000 pounds. The reverse slip divides pounds by 1,000 and calls the result “tons”, which is only right for kilograms. The 80,000-pound federal gross weight limit for five-axle trucks on Interstates, for example, is 40 short tons but about 36.29 metric tonnes. For truck freight priced by density, see the freight class calculator.
