How it is calculated
How to convert lbs to kg
kilograms = pounds × 0.45359237. For 150 lb: 150 × 0.45359237 = 68.039 kg. Going back, pounds = kilograms ÷ 0.45359237, or kilograms × 2.20462: 100 kg ÷ 0.45359237 = 220.462 lb. The factor is exact: since 1959 the international pound is defined as 0.45359237 kg, and one pound is 16 ounces.
Gym plates: 45 lb is not 20 kg
American plates are marked in pounds, and the usual 45 lb plate is 20.412 kg, not the 20 kg of a metric plate. Four of them on each side of a 45 lb bar add up to 8 × 45 + 45 = 405 lb, which is 183.705 kg. Smaller plates: 25 lb = 11.34 kg, 10 lb = 4.536 kg. Mixing metric and pound plates makes your total off by a few percent, so convert each one before adding.
Airline baggage limits
US airlines usually allow 50 lb in the standard checked bag, which is 22.68 kg, while many airlines elsewhere cap at 23 kg. The heavy-bag band up to 70 lb is 31.751 kg – close to the 32 kg that many carriers treat as the safety maximum. Weigh in kilograms, and a bag marked 23 kg is 50.706 lb, a hair over the 50 lb line.
Pounds and ounces, stone
Babies are weighed in pounds and ounces: 7.5 lb is 7 lb 8 oz, or 3.402 kg. In the UK body weight is given in stone (1 st = 14 lb = 6.350 kg); 150 lb is 10 st 10 lb. The line under the answer shows both forms.
A quick mental trick
Divide pounds by 2.2: 150 ÷ 2.2 = 68.2 kg against 68.039 exact. Or halve the pounds and subtract 10 % of the half: 150 → 75 → 67.5 kg. In the other direction double the kilograms and add 10 %: 70 kg → 140 + 14 = 154 lb (exact: 154.324).
