How it is calculated
How to convert minutes to hours
hours = minutes ÷ 60. For 90 minutes: 90 ÷ 60 = 1.5 h. Going back, minutes = hours × 60: 2.25 h × 60 = 135 min. Hours-and-minutes is the other way to write it: 135 min is 2 h 15 min, while 2.15 h would be 2 h 9 min – mixing the two forms is the most common timesheet error.
Decimal hours for payroll
Time clocks and payroll tools often want decimal hours. The easy ones: 15 min = 0.25 h, 30 min = 0.5 h, 45 min = 0.75 h. The awkward ones repeat: 20 min = 0.3333 h, 40 min = 0.6667 h, 50 min = 0.8333 h. Rounded to two decimals they are 0.33, 0.67 and 0.83, so three 20-minute jobs (60 minutes) show as 0.99 h – the reason many employers record time in 6-minute units, where every unit is exactly 0.1 h: 6 min = 0.1 h, 12 min = 0.2 h, 18 min = 0.3 h, 24 min = 0.4 h.
Work out the pay
With decimal hours the sum is one multiplication: 1 h 45 min is 105 min = 1.75 h, and at $20 an hour that is $35. Do not multiply 1.45 by 20, which would use 1 h 45 min as if it were a decimal.
Longer spans
An 8-hour shift is 480 minutes, a 40-hour week is 2,400 minutes, a day is 1,440 minutes and a feature film of 120 minutes is 2 hours.
A quick mental trick
Split the minutes into 60s and then take a fraction: 75 min = 60 + 15, so 1 h plus a quarter hour = 1.25 h. To add up a whole list of clock times such as 7:45 and 8:15 use minutes to decimal hours; for other time units see the time converter, and for your pay the work hours calculator.
