How it is calculated
How to convert minutes to decimal hours
Decimal hours write a time as a single number: hours + minutes ÷ 60. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours. An “industrial minute” (common in German-speaking payroll) is one hundredth of an hour, so 1 hour = 100 industrial minutes and 7.75 hours = 775.
Conversions
- Minutes → decimal hours: divide by 60. 15 min = 0.25 h, 30 min = 0.5 h, 45 min = 0.75 h.
- Decimal hours → minutes: multiply the fraction by 60. 0.1 h = 6 min.
- Decimal hours → industrial minutes: multiply by 100. 7.75 h = 775.
Adding up a list of times
In “Add up a list of times” enter one working time per line, for example 7:45, 8:15 and 6:30. The converter adds them in minutes and shows the total as hours:minutes, decimal hours and industrial minutes. With an hourly rate you get the gross pay at once, because decimal hours can simply be multiplied by the rate.
Honest limits
Quarter hours give clean values (0.25, 0.5, 0.75), other minutes give endless decimals, such as 20 min = 0.3333 h. Rounding rules are set by your employer or payroll system. The pay shown is gross, without overtime premiums or deductions.
