How it is calculated
The rule and the trap
seconds = minutes × 60 and minutes = seconds ÷ 60. 5 min = 300 s, 0.5 min = 30 s and, back again, 90 s = 1.5 min. The trap is the decimal point: 2.5 minutes is 2 minutes 30 seconds (150 s), because half a minute is 30 s. Writing it as “2:50” is wrong. The line under the answer converts for you: 2 min 45 s for 2.75 min, clock form 2:45.
From seconds to the clock
To turn 400 seconds into minutes and seconds, divide: 400 ÷ 60 = 6 remainder 40, so 6:40 (the decimal answer is 6.667 min). Long values roll into hours: 5,400 s is 90 min, written as 1:30:00 (1 h 30 min). The converter carries over correctly, so 59.6 s displays as 1:00 and never 0:60.
