How it is calculated

How to convert mm to m

meters = millimeters ÷ 1000 and millimeters = meters × 1000. Milli means one thousandth, so you move the decimal point three places: 1,500 mm = 1.5 m, 297 mm = 0.297 m, 0.75 m = 750 mm. Small values get leading zeros: five millimeters is 0.005 m.

Why plans use millimeters

Construction drawings, kitchen plans and engineering parts are dimensioned in millimeters so that every size is a whole number: a door 2,010 mm high, a worktop 600 mm deep. To read such a plan in meters, divide by 1000 or simply put the decimal point three places from the right: 2,010 mm = 2.01 m.

Common mistakes

The usual slip is moving the decimal point two places instead of three, as if the value were in centimeters. A wall that is 1.5 meters wide then turns into 15 meters. Check the answer against something familiar: an interior door is about two meters high and a sheet of paper is just under thirty centimeters. When reading plans, it is easiest to keep everything in one unit and convert to meters only at the end.
